Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a fee for campers?
For over 35 years, we have been fully funded by donations. Camp is free for all patient campers and siblings. Donations can be made here, but no camper will be turned away for lack of a donation.
When is Camp?
Our next camp session is
June 10-15, 2024!
Who may attend?
Camp Rising Sun welcomes any child between the ages of 6-16 who has battled, or is currently battling, cancer. Space allowing, we encourage each patient camper to invite one guest (sibling or friend) free of charge.
Who is responsible for my child’s healthcare at camp?
The Med-Shed at Camp Rising Sun is staffed 24 hours/day. We have three volunteer physicians, four volunteer nurse practitioners, and two nurses whose goal is to keep the campers (and volunteers) involved in activities and out of the Med-Shed. Our medical staff works hard to create an environment that “feels” like any regular summer camp
What medical services are available for my child?
We deliver routine medications and treatments to the campers as prescribed by the primary care providers in order to minimize any disruption in their activities. We are equipped to manage minor medical situations and render first aid in the event of emergencies. All emergency medical issues requiring more than first aid will be immediately transported to the nearest emergency facility.
Do I need to bring my child’s medical supplies?
Please bring all medications and needed supplies to Camp Rising Sun with your child. Make sure you send enough medication and supplies to last the duration of camp. This includes all medications (prescription and over the counter, IV, and injectables), supplies for central line care (heparin, saline, syringes, caps, access needles, EMLA, etc.) and other supplies as needed (IV or pump tubing, pumps and supplies, wheelchair, crutches, etc.). If your child needs supplemental oxygen, this must be arranged prior to coming to Camp Rising Sun.
What happens if my child gets sick at Camp?
If your child gets sick while at Camp Rising Sun, he/she will be evaluated by the physicians and/or nurse practitioners at Camp Rising Sun. Minor medical problems (minor cuts, bug bites, ear ache, headache, etc.) can be handled at Camp Rising Sun. If emergency medical care is needed, then the camper will be transported to the nearest hospital emergency room for further care. Our medical staff will contact you and your child’s primary/specialty physician if any questions or significant medical issues arise.
How can I be sure my child is well enough to attend camp?
While you and your child’s personal physician must determine if your child is well enough to attend camp, all applications are reviewed by camp medical staff for final approval.
Special medical forms are included in the application package and must be submitted with the final application at least two weeks before the start of camp.
Feel free to contact us with any questions.
How do I apply for my child to come to camp?
Please visit our application page here.
All applications and medical forms need to be returned at least 2 weeks prior to the first day of camp.
The next deadline is May 27, 2024.
However, space fills up fast, so reserve your spot as soon as possible!
What SHOULD my child pack for camp?
Closed-toed shoes, swimsuits, flashlights, sunscreen, bug spray- This is a traditional summer camp experience, after all!
A complete list of packing suggestions can be found in the application packet and online here.
Can my child bring a cell phone to call home?
We want each camper to have a full camp experience without distractions, so it is highly recommended that all personal electronic equipment (cell phones, iPads, game boys, etc.) be left at home.Campers may phone home at any time by visiting the nurses' station. All electronic devices will need to be turned in to the nurses cabin upon arrival. We are not responsible for any lost or damaged personal items.
Do you provide transportation?
We do not. We encourage you to carpool with other camper families. If you need assistance with transportation, please let us know and we will be happy to assist you in finding a carpool family, if possible.
